Black Skimmer

Black Skimmer Call

Recorded at Hunting Island State Park, South Carolina, October, 2005.

The Black Skimmer is a tern-like sea bird that breeds in North and South America.  It breeds on sandbanks and sandy beaches such as the one where I recorded this call at Hunting Island State Park, South Carolina.  There is an area of the island where all the sea birds tend to gather and I was lucky enough to be there early one October morning when the Black Skimmers were mingling with seagulls and other sea birds.

Black Skimmer parents tend to feed their young during the day since the entire flock sometimes departs the colony to forage at night.

The Cornell Lab or Ornithology has more info on the Black Skimmer HERE.
